    A

    Assessment

    A tool used to test your learners' understanding of the courses delivered to them. Course assessments can be in the form of quizzes, knowledge checks, surveys, or assignments, depending on the learning objectives.

    Asynchronous learning

    All other types of learning in which the learners don't participate simultaneously are called asynchronous learning. Learners complete the courses at their own pace and at a time that's convenient for them.

    Blended learning

    Blended learning combines the approaches of traditional classroom learning and online learning experiences. In a blended learning program, learners attend in-person classes led by instructors while completing certain online lessons assigned to them.

    C

    Certification

    A reward provided to learners on the successful completion of a course or a specific module. It serves as a credential that proves a learner has gained the knowledge and skills offered through the online training program.

    Course

    A compilation of related content delivered to users to train them on a particular subject or help them achieve a skill.

    Customer training

    A type of extended enterprise training targeted at the customers of a business. It's a training program curated to enable customers to use a product or service throughout the entire customer lifecycle.

    E

    elearning

    The use of the internet, technology, and digital media for training. It's a process in which training is delivered and consumed using software via electronic devices over the internet.

    Employee onboarding

    To integrate new hires into the organization, employee onboarding involves sets of activities that employees need to go through to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to become effective organizational stakeholders.

    Experience API

    Experience API (xAPI), also known as Tin Can API, is the successor of SCORM. xAPI is a set of rules and specifications that elearning platforms need to follow to record and track the activities of individual learners and their overall experience with the course.

    Extended enterprise training

    Extended enterprise training focuses on training an organization's external stakeholders. It's a strategy for the creation and delivery of online courses for non-employees, such as customers, clients, investors, partners, suppliers, and vendors.

    G

    Gamification

    Gamification adds engaging activities and game elements to the learning experience. It involves using points, leaderboards, badges, and certificates in training programs.

    I

    Instructor

    Someone who facilitates an online training program. They guide the users through the course, evaluate their progress, and provide feedback based on performance.

    Instructor-led training

    Commonly known as ILT, this type of training requires an instructor to facilitate the training for learners either virtually or in a classroom environment.

    L

    Learning management system (LMS)

    A software application that assists the delivery and management of online training. LMS tools provide a platform to create, deliver, and track online courses for internal and external users of an organization.

    Learning objectives

    Statements that define the goal of a training program. They describe what the learners should be able to do after completing a course.

    Learning path

    A structured program that consists of a series of courses for learners to help them master a subject or build a skill.

    Lesson

    A small, measurable unit that covers a particular topic in a course.

    M

    Microlearning

    The process of learning small chunks of information in short bits over short time bursts. It allows instructors to break complex topics into bite-sized content and deliver them at regular intervals of time.

    Mobile learning

    A type of online learning in which learners complete their training through mobile devices. The portability of these devices enables learners to complete their courses from anywhere, at any time.

    Module

    A set of organized lessons or activities that focuses on a particular segment of an online course.

    P

    Personalized learning

    An approach that provides customized learning paths depending on the training needs, interests, aspirations, and skills of individual learners. The content, delivery, and pace of the training programs are optimized for each learner.

    S

    SCORM

    The Sharable Content Object Reference Model is a set of technical standards for e-courses. It governs the rules for course creation, delivery, and analysis of online courses to make sure they can run on any LMS.

    Social learning

    A form of learning in which individuals learn from interactions with each other. It's a collaborative process in which learners connect with their peers, participate in discussions, and learn together.

    Synchronous learning

    A training program in which all learners participate simultaneously. All learners will engage with the course in a classroom setup or virtually, at the same time, in the presence of an instructor.

    T

    Training analytics

    The collection, analysis, and reporting of data for individual learners or a group of users and their interactions with online courses. This helps in understanding the training effectiveness and finding areas for improvement to ensure training objectives are met.
