Incorporating quizzes that fit with the objectives of your training program is an effective way to test learner understanding. Online LMS solutions provide a variety of assessment question types that you can use to test your learners. In this article, we’ll discuss the different question types you can incorporate to help you find the right fit for your learning programs.

Multiple-choice questions

In a multiple-choice question, the learner has to choose one right answer from a list of potential answers. This is the most commonly used type of question used in a quiz. Multiple-choice questions can be used to quickly test if the learners can evaluate the options and apply what they've learned to find the correct answer.

Multiple-response questions

Multiple-response questions require the learner to choose multiple correct answers that match the definition or statement in the question. These types of questions are harder as the learner doesn't know how many answers are correct.

True or false questions

True or false questions are close-ended questions to which the learner has to respond if the given statement is true or not. These questions can be used to test if the learners know certain facts covered in the courses.

Fill-in-the-blank questions

In fill-in-the-blank questions, the learner is expected to fill in the gaps given in the question with the correct answer without any choices. This helps in analyzing the learner's knowledge because the learner has to give the exact answer without any prompts.

Matching questions

Matching questions contain a set of words and a jumbled list of phrases or statements. Learners are required to match the words to the corresponding phrases. This type of question can help you cover large swaths of content in a single question. It’s also an engaging way to test your learners on multiple subjects.

Short-answer questions

Short-answer questions are open-ended,  descriptive questions in which the learners are expected to explain the concept in two or three lines. The learners need to have a deeper understanding of the topics covered in the courses to answer these types of questions.

Long-answer questions

Long-answer questions are essay-type questions that take a longer amount of time to complete. These questions are used to test complex concepts or make the learners explain a use case based on the subject. To answer essay questions, the learners need to have an extensive understanding of the topic.

Sequencing

In sequencing questions, the learners are expected to put a given set of phrases in the correct order. Sequencing questions can be used to test learners' knowledge of chronological events or step-by-step processes.

Hotspot

A hotspot question contains an image marked with certain points. The learners are required to identify the areas with the correct words or phrases. Hotspot questions can be used as an engaging tool to test if the learners can retain visual information.

Likert scale questions

A Likert scale is a 5- or 7-point scale on which the learners can express if they agree or disagree with a particular question or statement. Likert scale questions are commonly used in surveys.

Wrapping up

Using a variety of question types in your quizzes will help make your quizzes more engaging and challenging for your learners. It also facilitates testing your learners in different areas depending on your training objectives.
